The AC Power Systems Technical Associate assists in ensuring the successful operation, performance and maintenance of the ac power system.

Assist with maintenance, troubleshooting and operational activities of the Laboratory’s ac power system, which includes 480V, 4.16kV, 13.8kV, 26.4kV and 138kV equipment.

Supervise electrical maintenance and testing subcontractors that perform testing on PPPL power system equipment such as substations, transformers, circuit breakers, motor starters, motors, generators and other equipment.

Perform maintenance and operation of three stationary standby and several mobile diesel generators.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree in Electrical Technology preferred.  
  • Alternate: NJ Journeyman electrician based upon certified apprenticeship training and 10+ years’ experience in power systems.
  • NJ Electrical Inspector License is a plus.
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or the ability to obtain a CDL is a plus.

Understanding of:

  • OSHA safety requirements and lock-out / tag-out
  • Electrical system drawings such as: control elementary, one-line diagrams, and machine/equipment schematics
  • The types of AC power system protective relay systems and protective relay schemes used for the protection of power transformers and circuit breakers
  • Fuse and breaker coordination, basic level
  • Experience in electrical construction. For example: industrial installations of low voltage, medium voltage and high voltage power systems
  • Knowledge and experience with current NFPA 70 National Electrical Code (NEC) and NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace

Ability to:

  • Write installation procedures and statements of work
  • Perform electrical calculations using the NEC
  • Perform electrical design wiring changes or alterations and mark-up as-built drawings with changes
  • Analyze and troubleshoot ac power systems equipment
  • Familiarity with transformer mineral oil processing and processing equipment
