This position is located in the Duke Energy Progress (DEP) headquarters in downtown Raleigh, NC. This position will be within the “Production Standards” team of Transmission Engineering for DEP.  This newly formed workgroup will directly support the three DEP Transmission Engineering Units (Substation, Transmission Line, and Protection & Control) by developing and maintaining design standard drawings that are used to perform the physical design of electric power substations, transmission lines, and their protection and control schemes.  This workgroup will also be responsible for developing materials listings that support the standard designs, including the creation and maintenance of compatible units (CU’s), when needed. The position requires coordinating work with peers and other workgroups to support the timely completion of updated or new design standards.  The position utilizes a variety of tools and techniques in order to complete an engineering design standard, including new Standard Positions Statements (SPS), current design specifications, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources.  This position is specifically seeking candidates that are experienced and capable of performing in a Senior-level Technologist role within the Transmission Line Engineering portion of the team.

This is the senior level position in the Engineering Technologist job family.  Candidates are expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently.  The person in this position will be a member of a team developing detailed standard drawings packages.  The Sr. Eng. Technologist should have a background in design, project coordination and an understanding of project scheduling processes to facilitate the process of developing or updating a design standard.  The Sr. Eng. Technologist will utilize a variety of tools and techniques in order complete an engineering design standard, including current design specifications, applicable Standard Position Statements, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources.  Sr. Eng. Technologist also supports early project estimates and scope documents of requested work to ensure that engineering is directed properly from project inception.  The Sr. Eng. Technologist will also deliver production standards work via Supply Chain contractor work process, as needed.  This includes the creation of Request for Information (RFI’s) and Proposals (RFP’s), as well as reviewing/making recommendations for the hiring of Engineering Contract Firms for specific project work.  The Sr. Eng. Technologist will guide and direct engineering contractors and review and approve contract engineering packages, when contract firms are used.  Additionally, the person in this position will be expected to continue developing their expertise in Transmission Line design principles based on current and evolving standards (IEEE, NERC, NESC, NEC, ASCE, ACI, etc.). The person in this position must be able to manage multiple projects in various stages of design so as to meet project schedule deadlines; provide support to engineering personnel during project implementation; and develop and maintain a sufficient level of expertise in use of CAD software for efficient completion of production standards work. This person will work with other organizations in developing Production Standards that meet the requirements of our Standards Positions Statements and the needs of our Engineering units.

Normal job functions are performed on a Monday through Friday schedule with some system travel required (approximately 25%); must be available for call-out and work during system emergencies; Alternate work schedules, including ½ day Friday and Alternate Friday off, are available.


Basic/Required Qualifications

Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology with a minimum of six (6) years of industry experience, OR an Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology with a minimum of eight (8) years of experience, OR a minimum of twelve (12) years of experience in lieu of a degree


Desired Qualifications

Experience in the utility industry, with Transmission Line Design.

Proficient in applying principles of project management.

Demonstrated good understanding of electric utility Transmission Lines and code requirements associated with their design, as well as the ability to produce construction documents

Demonstrated proficiency with engineering computer packages – Microstation, and/or AutoCAD, Inventor, AutoCAD Electrical, PLS-CADD

Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in priorities, and remain calm and effective in stressful situations.

Demonstrated ability to meet required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks.

Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, partners, customers, and the public by adapting to various personality styles in a professional manner.

Experience and demonstrated written and oral communications skills, including the ability to present information, facilitate meetings and provide direction to others.
