Note: Transmission Line Design experience is required to be successful in this role.

This position is responsible for leading the Carolina’s East Transmission Line Engineering team.  Design projects range from routine modifications of existing lines and to the complete design of new transmission facilities.  The Lead Engineer coordinates work of engineering staff members to manage multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs.  The Lead Engineer works with the Manager of the team to assist in getting projects assigned, communicating any issues with projects through the design process and in assessing the staff to assist with the creation of development plans for the staff engineers.  The Lead Engineer should have a background in design, project coordination and an understanding of project scheduling processes to assist the engineering staff through the project design process.  The Lead Engineer will utilize a variety of tools and techniques in order to assist the engineering staff with completing an engineering designs, including current design specifications, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources.  Lead Engineer also creates early project estimates and scope documents of requested work to ensure that engineering is directed properly from project inception.


Major Job Duties

The Lead Engineer will oversee transmission line engineering designs on projects ranging from routine equipment modifications and installations to the complete design of new transmission facilities.  Coordinates and manages multiple projects within the unit and with other entities to ensure timely release of engineering designs.  The successful candidate will direct the work of the engineering staff, contract engineering consultants, and others to develop construction release packages for transmission lines.  This work must be done in a way to inspire the team to a higher level of performance.

Lead Engineer will work with other organizations on highly complex line routing and siting resolution issues.  The Lead Engineer will work with Siting and Permitting, Project Management Real Estate, Account Representatives, Transmission Construction and Maintenance, Asset Protection, Vegetation Management, Asset Management, Distribution, Generation and other interests in the company to assist the siting team in determining alternatives and design solutions that meet customer and company requirements.   The Lead Engineer must understand company guidelines for accounting principles and hold the staff accountable for following the guidelines.  The Lead Engineer will have to interface with the public occasionally.

The Lead Engineer will assist staff engineers in delivering work via Supply Chain contractor work process.  This includes assisting with the creation of Request for Information (RFI’s) and Proposals (RFP’s), and reviewing and making recommendations for hiring of Engineering Contract Firm for specific project work.  The Lead Engineer will assist the engineering staff with guiding and directing the engineering contractors and reviews and approves contract engineering packages.


The Lead Engineer will assist our Production Standards personnel in creation of new or improving our set of production standards used to produce design work.  The Lead engineer will also hold the engineering staff accountable for using the production standards.  The Lead Engineer will conduct technical and financial studies and analyze alternatives to determine proper equipment and/or applications through the Production Standards organization.  The Lead Engineer will prepare documentation, technical reports, calculations and drawings to conduct analysis and recommend process improvements and standards relative to line engineering. 


The Lead Engineer will work with the line engineering staff members to give guidance on technical issues, interpretation of standards, codes and engineering practices.  Also gives guidance on engineering tool usage, design package content, design review and other transmission line engineering practices.  The Lead Engineer will work with the unit Manager to determine engineering staff workload and staff technical development plans, and provide feedback for use in individual performance appraisals.


The Lead Engineer will provide design support to Construction and Maintenance personnel during project implementation and assist in troubleshooting, problem resolution and provide on-site support.  The Lead Engineer may also be called upon to support Maintenance items such as failed structure analysis, replacement and technical problem resolution.  The Lead Engineer may have to modify designs to address construction problems, environmental circumstances and public concerns. The Lead Engineer verifies that field modifications will not undermine the integrity of the design and incorporates field modifications into the design documents to ensure configuration control of system components.


The Lead Engineer will take part in analyzing, scoping, and developing projects in the development stage.  This includes using production standards and the Enable tool set to create scope and estimates for planned future projects in the early development state.  The Lead Engineer will create high level estimates and scope clarification for specific project designs.


Licensure:  A current Professional Engineer’s license is required to be considered for this position.  Note: The Lead Engineer must be able to obtain a North Carolina and South Carolina Professional Engineers license within one year from the start of the position if their current PE registration is from a state other than NC or SC..




Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering obtained from an ABET accredited program, and/or state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE),
  • A Master’s degree in Engineering in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering will be considered
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of engineering experience
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE)


Desired Qualifications

Bachelor of Science degree from a four-year ABET accredited college or university in the specialization of Civil Engineering. A mechanical or electrical engineering ABET degree will be also considered.


A minimum of eight years of Transmission Line design experience. 


Demonstrated increasing level of technical complexity of Transmission Line project work over time.


 Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to work cross functionally with a variety of individuals in differing organizations with a wide diversity makeup. 


Good organizational and verbal and written communication skills.
